Mission Statement: To provide advocacy, education and support for veterans with hearing loss, minimizing the impact of hearing loss on their daily life.

Support for Our Veterans: Navigating Hearing Loss and Tinnitus

Did you know that hearing loss and tinnitus are the two most common service-connected disabilities? Today, they affect nearly three million service members. If you are experiencing changes in your hearing, please know you are not alone—and we are here to support you.
The Association of Late Deafened Adults (ALDA) offers a welcoming virtual discussion page on Facebook created exclusively for veterans. It is a safe space to connect, share experiences, and find resources with peers who truly understand your journey.

Understanding the Causes of Service-Related Hearing Loss

Hearing challenges can stem from many different aspects of military service, including:
  • Heavy weaponry: Regular exposure to gunfire, explosions, and blast weaponry.
  • Specialized roles: Prolonged exposure to high noise levels in fields like aviation.
  • Sudden trauma: A single, severe acoustic blast event.
  • Chemical exposure: Contact with ototoxic (hearing-damaging) chemicals.
  • Physical injuries: Traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Related conditions: Managing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • General factors: Natural aging or other everyday causes.
