UPDATE: As of Feb 24, 2021 Zoom captioning is automatically available to ALL paid accounts, and will be made available to EVERYONE by Fall 2021. For those of us with hearing loss who require Live Transcription right away, you can request it on the Zoom blog. We’re grateful to our advocates such as Shari Eberts who have pushed hard for this access for all.
There has been a great deal of confusion as to what Zoom is actually offering regarding captioning access. When pressed, the company has declined the opportunity to make a public statement. While they have previously indicated that they are making free captioning available to K12 educators and people who identify as having hearing loss, it appears that individuals must request individual access and wait patiently. We are told that this can be done by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
To be clear, they are NOT offering captioning FREE FOR ALL at this time. We at ALDA are staying on top of this issue and hope to update the community in as timely a manner as possible. We appreciate your support and understanding.
As of January 11, 2021 there has been no official update from ZOOM.
