Have you ever wondered "Are there others like me who can't hear well or can't hear anymore?" "How will I manage?" "Will I be able to keep my job?" "Will I still be able to use a telephone or hear my children when they call out to me?" What services are available to me?" "Where will I find the help I need?"
You are not alone. The Association of Late - Deafened Adults (ALDA) is a nonprofit organization with the general objectives of providing Education, Advocacy, Role models and Support (EARS) for people with adventitious hearing loss.
Membership in ALDA includes the quarterly newsletter ALDA News and the business reports ALDA Biz.
ALDA News prides itself on being the premier newsletter for hard of hearing and late-deafened adults, featuring articles written BY people with hearing loss FOR people with hearing loss. While many ALDA members are professionals in the field of deaf and hard of hearing services, our articles focus on the consumer perspective: one person connecting with another through personal experience.
ALDA’s communication philosophy, “whatever works, works!” is evident in the wide range of experience displayed in ALDA News. Each quarterly issue focuses on a selected theme that gives writers the opportunity to share their experiences concerning that topic. Additional articles and regular features about late-deafness also appear in each issue. All writers are volunteers and may or may not be ALDA, Inc. members. ALDAcon Proceedings
Each year at ALDAcon a variety of workshops on many topics are presented. Following ALDAcon, the transcripts of these presentations are edited, and made available on the ALDA website, so that the valuable information presented at the 'con can be read by all. ALDA is proud to provide this resource on behalf of all those who have hearing loss.
The ALDAcon Proceedings project began in 1996 when it was decided after ALDAcon, to edit, and make available in hard copy, the workshops that were presented that year. This undertaking would not have been possible without the help and partnership of The Research Rehabilitation and Training Center at the University of Arkansas. The key players were Douglas Watson PhD and Stephen Boone PhD. ALDA owes a HUGE debt of gratitude to these two men, as well as the Center at the University, for their ongoing support through the years.
The ALDAcon Proceedings were issued in hard copy from 1996 through the year 1999. The editors during that time were Steve Larew of ALDA, who worked with Doug and Steve Boone for the first year, and, Roy Miller, a former president of ALDA Inc, took over in 1997 as the project gained momentum. In 1998 Carolyn Piper began to work with the team from the University, which she continues to do to the present day, with the able help and support of a team of volunteer editors who have included Margreta Von Pein and Michele Bornert.
In the year 2000 the ALDAcon Proceedings were placed on the ALDA Inc web site for the first time, and it is here that they continue to be made available - a feat made possible through the years by our ALDA Inc Web Master Ken Arcia. We hope you will enjoy the selection of presentations available here, and join us at future ALDAcons to hear and see many other programs and events.
